Analysis of Ethylene Oxide and its metabolite 2-Chloro Ethanol in Foods
Many countries are facing more Ethylene Oxide related recalls after the substance was detected in food additives. According to experts there is no safe level of exposure for consumers in products that contain this contaminant, and any level may be a potential risk.
Now in South Africa, AGQ Labs offers analysis of Ethylene Oxide and its metabolite 2-chloro ethanol for the food industry. As always, we use the latest technique, GC-MSMS and with a LC of 0.01 mg/kg with turnaround times adjusted to the needs of its customers.
This substance could be present in raw materials of vegetable origin destined for direct human consumption, or which are used as ingredients in the manufacture of different food products or, in turn, as raw material for the manufacture of such ingredients.
Where it has been detected?
The raw materials in which the presence of Ethylene Oxide has been detected so far are: raisins, sesame seeds, black pepper, turmeric, ground ginger, psyllium seed, organic spirulina powder, organic flaxseed, organic fenugreek, buckwheat flour and the food additives E410 (locust bean gum) and E412 (guar gum).
